The Skene's glands (female prostate) comprise a network of tiny tubules enmeshed in the erectile tissue surrounding the urethra. This network of glands has about 30 ducts and two main ducts on the side of the urethral opening. The ducts located in the erectile tissue along the urethra (urethral sponge) drain into the urethra, sometimes resulting in squirting, and the two external ducts release fluid near the urethral opening and thus lubricate the vestibule and vaginal opening.

Bartholin's glands are pea-sized glands at the bottom of the vulva and, upon arousal, lubricate the opening of the vagina, which makes it easier for a penis, toy, or fingers to slide in and out easily. Sometimes, the duct of the Bartholin's gland becomes blocked, and the fluid produced by the gland then accumulates, causing the gland to swell and form a painful Bartholin cyst.

Internal lubrication is the most abundant; it protects the vaginal walls and avoids irritation during penetration. 

Vaginal walls are naturally moist, but during arousal, the many vessels in the tissues become engorged with blood, and the lining of the vagina will filter the blood and release fluid.
